Our Mission

At Veritas Equina, our mission is to deepen your understanding of your horse — beyond what training and experience alone can reveal.

We are a team of molecular genetic specialists who closely follow the latest research on performance horse genetics. Through advanced genetic insight, we help you uncover your horse’s natural strengths and hidden vulnerabilities, so you can make smarter choices in training, care, and competitions.

Whether you’re planning your next event, a breeding decision, or a major purchase, we aim to support better outcomes — for your time, your investment, and your performance as a team.

#1 Why is genetic testing important

Understanding Your Horse

Genetic testing can reveal whether your horse is more naturally suited for endurance or strength-based disciplines, or whether it tends to be more cautious or curious in temperament.

These insights go beyond what you can observe during training — they help explain how your horse is built to perform and behave. This gives you a clearer picture of what your horse needs, both physically and mentally, to succeed.

#2 Why is genetic testing important

Tailoring Training and Care

Once you understand your horse’s genetic predispositions, you can adjust their training and care to fit their needs. Some horses are more prone to overheating, slower recovery, or have higher risk for joint or tendon issues. By knowing these risks early on, you can schedule more targeted veterinary checks, adapt workloads, and catch problems before they become serious injuries. It’s about protecting your horse’s health while getting the most out of their ability.

#3 Why is genetic testing important

Breeding

Genetic testing helps breeders choose pairs that complement each other — matching strengths and avoiding the combination of genes that could lead to inherited diseases. Even if two horses look healthy, they may still pass on unwanted traits unless tested. By using genetics, you increase the chance of producing healthy, high-performance foals that are better suited for modern sport demands.

#4 Why is genetic testing important

Buying and Selling

Genetic testing adds clarity and confidence to the sales process. For horse buyers, it helps confirm whether a horse is a good fit for their goals and avoids the risk of investing in horses that may carry invisible genetic weaknesses or healt risks. For sellers, offering a test result shows honesty and professionalism — giving buyers a reason to trust the quality and transparency of what you're offering.

How is it done?

For laboratory analysis, we require a sample of approximately 20–30 horse hairs plucked from the horses mane or tail. Any horse handler or carer can painlessly extract the sample by gripping a few hairs close to the skin and pulling firmly in a swift motion. Then you just send the sample to us and we take care of the rest.

Once the sample is processed in the laboratory, we provide a comprehensive report that explains your horse’s unique genetic profile — along with insights into potential strengths, risks, and recommendations for optimizing care and training. The information is in your hands —how you use it can make the difference between just riding, and riding to win.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. I already have a veterinarian. Why would I need a genetic test?

This genetic test isn’t a substitute for your veterinarian — it’s a specialized tool that complements their work. While some vets may be familiar with a few basic genetic conditions, our performance panel is specifically designed for elite sport horses. It focuses on cutting-edge genetic markers related to athletic potential, recovery, temperament, and injury risk. Most veterinarians don’t routinely test for these traits, as they fall outside the scope of general practice. By combining veterinary care with advanced genetic insight, you can better understand how your horse is built to perform — and make smarter decisions in training, management, and breeding.

2. What exactly will I learn from the test?

The test reveals your horse’s genetic predispositions across two key areas: performance and health.

The performance section examines genes linked to traits such as strength versus endurance, gait mechanics, and temperament — all of which influence how your horse moves, learns, and competes. These insights can help you better understand your horse’s natural aptitude for specific disciplines and make smarter training or competition choices.

The health section screens for genetic variants associated with potential risks to systems such as the brain, eyes, skin, hooves, vascular function, muscles, hormones, skeleton and more.

Knowing these predispositions early allows you to adapt care and training plans to reduce injury risk and support long-term well-being — tailored to your horse’s unique genetic profile.

3. Can I test more than one horse at once? Do you offer volume discounts?

Absolutely. You can test as many horses as you like—just make sure each sample is packaged separately and clearly labeled. For larger submissions (typically 3 or more horses),we do offer volume discounts. Feel free to contact us directly to discuss pricing based on the number of horses you plan to test.

4. Is the test safe for my horse?

Yes, the test is completely safe and non-invasive. We typically require a small sample of mane or tail hair with the root bulb attached, which causes no harm to the horse when collected correctly. No needles, sedation, or special handling are needed. It’s a simple, low-stress process for both horse and handler.

5. Can this test predict if my horse will win?

Winning comes down to two key factors: the right genetics and the right training routine. All world-class horses have both. This test helps you check the first box by uncovering your horse’s genetic potential for performance, recovery, temperament, and more. But it also supports the second— because understanding your horse’s innate strengths and limitations allows you to tailor training, management, and even rider pairing more effectively. It does not guarantee a trophy, but it gives you the largest edge in becoming a winner.

6. How long does it take to get results?

We aim to deliver results as quickly as possible. In most cases, it takes around 14 days — or two business weeks — from the time we receive your sample. This includes international delivery to our partner laboratory in the USA, the time required to process the DNA and analyze it, and delivering the results to you.

7. How do the results look like? How will i know what to do with them?

The report is carefully written to be clear and accessible while maintaining a high level of detail. We’ve structured it so that even clients without a background in genetics can understand the key insights and apply them meaningfully. That said, the depth of information is significant, and some results may have nuanced implications depending on your horse’s discipline and goals.

To support you in making the most of the findings, each report includes a section with recommended considerations tailored to your horse’s genetic profile. For a more in-depth understanding, we offer personalized consultations—free with the Veritas Suprema panel, or available separately.
